Facts About Cambodia

• Cambodia declared its independence from France in 1953, but between 1975-1979, the Khmer Rouge and its infamous leader Pol Pot ruled the country. This is a dark period for Cambodia because close to two million people were murdered under this regime. Most of Cambodia's (65%) population is under 35 because of the Khmer rouge's brutality.
• The national dish is curry. Cambodians also like to eat insects, delicacies ranging from crickets to tarantulas.
• Cambodia's flag is the only flag in the world featuring a building, the largest religious complex in the world--Angor Wat.
• The US dollar is one of the country's currencies. Birthdays aren't generally celebrated especially in rural areas, but older people, not knowing the exact date may celebrated their birth year or season. And there are no McDonald's in Cambodia
