Doggie Memes from God
February 14, 2025

Andy, our seven-year-old, mini–Australian Labradoodle is the silent member of our family. Usually. Most of his day is spent sleeping. He will snooze at the foot of my bed or curled in a ball in his condo (This is what we call Andy’s indoor doghouse) or on his back with his body twisted and legs in the air. He’s very relaxed but it doesn’t look comfortable to me.

Sometimes Andy’s antics—silent or noisy—remind me of a phrase or verse from the Word of God. Pairing his behavior with a portion of Scripture is like having a meme come to life. Here are three for your mind’s eye.

  • Andy’s welcome home greetings can be a noisy and rambunctious ritual of simultaneous high-pitched barking, tail-wagging, and batting at us with his paws. Likewise, all of heaven are in a joyous uproar when a sinner repents. It must be crazier than a football crowd after the home team scores an I-don’t-believe-it touchdown.

“In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10 NIV

  • When he is perched on his cot to survey the territory outside the front window, Andy is the Acting DOD. He’s the Dog on Duty to watch and morphs into the Department of Defense alerting us to a trespassing fox in the front yard or someone with an open umbrella walking by the house. God has his own Department Of Defense—his Angel-Armies who watch over and protect his children.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.  Psalm 91:11 NIV.

  • Andy always comes looking for me. When I’m in the RV bedroom having my quiet time or reading, he will hop on the bed a few minutes later. The same thing happens at home. He just wants to be in the same room with me. God is no different. He wants to be with me and is with me wherever I go.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. Psalm 139:7-8 NIV

Whether you have a dog or not or no pet at all, images to pair with God’s Word for a live meme are all around us. A flower. The house with great curb appeal. Your pet iguana. Something in your surroundings might cue you to remember what is written in his Word. During those quiet pauses in your day, look and listen. There’s a special meme from God waiting for you.
