Southeast Asia: The World of Vietnam – November 2024

We finally got there! To Southeast Asia to visit Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Once again, we traveled with Tauck’s and had a good experience.

This first PhotoTravel book will take you on our tour of Vietnam. Out of the 200 plus photos I took, this is only a highlight of our trip. Maybe a gallery of some of the others will be a future post. For now, CLICK the book and enjoy the trip through Vietnam.

Some brief facts:

  • France conquered Vietnam in 1858 and became part of French Indochina in 1887. The Vietnamese defeated the French in 1954, then divided into North and South Vietnam. The Communist North vanquished the South in 1975.
  • From 1975 to 1986, Vietnam’s economy was static until it moved to a market-based economy.
  • The south has tropical weather where as the north has a hot, rainy season (May-September) and warm, dry season (October-March)
  • The total population is over one million people with various ethnic groups. The majority are Kinh (Viet) 85.3%
  • Vietnamese is the official language with English as a second language, some French, Chinese and Khmer spoken as well
  • Religions: Catholic 6.1%, Buddhist 5.8%, Protestant 1%, and none 86.3%.
  • Government: communist party-led state
  • Exports: broadcasting equipment, garments. telephones
