To occupy the layover and flying hours, I download to my Kindle a book or two that is set in the country or the region I’m visiting. It has become as necessary as my luggage. This ritual started when we took our first trip to China and had to endure over 24 hours of travel time. Since we are cooling our overseas jet-setting for awhile, I’m sharing the books I read for the countries we visited in the past.
WARNING: I am a mystery, and historical fiction gal who slips in a nonfiction or a fiction tome every now and then. So forgive the repeating genre selections.
- China – The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (Historical fiction.)
- Peru – Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende (Historical fiction.)
- Jordan – The Tower by Alessandro Gallenzi (Mystery), Mrs. Pollifax, Innocent Tourist by Dorothy Gillman (Mystery from the Mrs. Pollifax series)
- Egypt – The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas (Fiction…a little mystery)
- Vietnam – The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen (I didn’t finish this one, but this is set after the Vietnam War, realistic fiction)
- Cambodia – The Woman of Angkor by John Burgess (Historical fiction)
- Thailand – Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon (a novel based on the true story of Anna Leonowens and inspired the productions of The King and I).
So far this summer, I’ve re-read two mysteries and a children’ book from my past: Baltimore Blues, and Charm City by Laura Lippman, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. Now I’m in the middle of Nun In the Closet (a mystery) by Dorothy Gillman.
What are you reading this summer? If you are OTR (on the road) or doing a staycation, share your summer reads with us. Readers are always ready to travel to a new place or time via a good book.

Hi Jacki, Thank God for providing a traveling spirit within your heart! So thankful to have an opportunity to pray for people all over the world. To God Be The Glory🙏🏽
Susu, your words are a blessing. Thank you.
Hi Jacki!
I love your zest for writing! We are praying for G. My hubby had prostrate cancer and surgical removal in 2021. Please let G know we are praying as he goes through this journey. We are also praying for you as you support and caregive. You both are in the palms of God’s mighty hands and will be traveling soon to meet your precious new granddaughter and her amazing big brother. Their hugs will be such healing balm to your hearts.
Keep writing ( and crocheting 😉) my friend… you have many gifts from God to share! 💝🙏🏼
Hey Amy! If laughter is good medicine, then encouraging words are like Tiger Balm. They go deep to the soul.Thank you for your prayers
